ARABS-ISLAM The Sunni and Shiite communities in the world are currently being ruled by the clergy, who are themselves divided between moderates and extremists. Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah's was among the few pioneers of moderate Islam in the Muslim world, columnist Abdul Rahman al-Rashed of the pan-Arab daily ASHARQ AL AWSAT reported Tuesday. The columnist praised Fadlallah's "rejection of the Shiite Islamic state in Iran," and said that by doing so the clergyman put his life in danger but prevailed. Rashed then compared the state of the Sunni community in the Muslim world to that of the Shiite community. He argued that Sunni intellectuals were currently "braver" than Shiite intellectuals, citing what he called the debate of "rejection of extremism" in the Arabian Gulf. "Shiite intellectuals are still not as brave and loud as Sunni intellectuals when confronting their religious leaders," he said.
